I joined a summer writing camp for the month of July. The discipline of sitting down, writing and meeting a daily goal is a wonderful feeling. I plan to have a finished draft in August and start submitting in September. The joy of writing is back. Whoohoo!
Taking a “vacation” was not a usual event in our family of seven, but we did manage to live in two countries [Italy and Turkey] courtesy of the US Navy and once settled back in the United States, visited family. As a big family, visiting other members of our extended family was our vacation.
As a child, visiting family meant climbing in our station wagon and driving straight from Washington, D.C. to Key West, Florida. We’d reach the Florida Keys and know that once we reached the Seven-mile Bridge we were almost there.
It always seemed to be around the July 4th break. My cousins would have spent the night on the beach, saving our place in the sand. Our days were full of sun, saltwater, shell hunting and great Cuban food. My favorite go-to meal when in Key West is always a good Cuban Mix sandwich. Still is, today.
It was a wonderful time of family gathering from several states to descend on my grandparents for a week. We heard lots of Spanish conversations we didn’t understand, enjoyed sleeping under a fan and waving palm fronds at each other. The “beach” brings back beautiful memories for me. Warm sand, hot sun and a walking the shore while at the beach is my all-time favorite pastime. It calms me, quiets my mind and lets me refresh my spirit.
As an adult, I still find any shore that gives me chance to walk near the water, breathe the salt air and listen to the sounds of waves to be a great vacation spot. From the Connecticut shores on the Long Island Sound…
To Mexico Beach, Florida where serene walks on the beach inspire creativity, where sea turtles come to lay their eggs and where I recharge is the best.
And now that we have a forever home, I can add the view from our hammock, the quiet swish of lake waters and breezy evenings on our dock as the next best thing to an extended beach vacation.

Today we are sharing our favorite places to read or write. I had to give this some thought as I read anywhere, everywhere and every chance I have to sit a moment. Lately, my favorite spot is reclining in bed. The lights are off and I can use my tablet for e-Reading. Or the lights are low and I treasure the feel of turning pages as I read.
Most of the time I look for places that give me inspiration for my writing. My favorite place for stilling my mind and letting my imagination flow is the beach. This photo is the view from our place last August on Mexico Beach, Florida. There’s a special peacefulness at 7am every morning when I walk.
Everywhere you turn there are secret gardens for the wanderer to enjoy in Charleston, S.C.. I let my imagination run free and savor those moments that return when I need a special setting or sense for a scene.
Below are also places I love to curl up with a new book and while away the time swept into a new adventure. The balmy weather, the birds that settle into my space and the sense that time has slowed for me to enjoy the moment. This view is from a restaurant on the beach at Gulf Shores. The Heron joined us for lunch one day.
The reality of my writing day is two messy desks, one for high-speed work like this blog.
And another desk I save for my escape into writing. Right now this desk holds a stacked manuscript waiting for edits. It’s a mess as I’m moving and have to pack.
Once I move into our new home, I’ll have the best views for inspiration and can’t wait to see where it takes my writing.
The view from my new office has a pond in the distance. With nine acres to wander and my husband planning secret gardens for me, inspiration will be everywhere. You’ll have to come visit. 🙂 And as always, my cats join me wherever I read.
